The Weight We Sit With

To coincide with Berlin Gallery Weekend, Arnela Trimmel launched a new body of work with a dinner event, transforming the venue into an intimate, multi-layered composition in collaboration with Freifrau.

In her work entitled The Weight We Sit With, the artist explores the body as a place where experiences are deposited and condensed. In abstract visual worlds, she translates emotional memory, vulnerability, and resilience into subtle layers and restrained densities. The works do not depict a body—they emerge from it. Inner states, often difficult to grasp, become atmosphere, gesture, and weight within the image.

Amid the paintings, the model Stella, painted in deep red, enters into a quiet dialogue with the works. The delicate wooden frames blend softly into the space and take up the idea of sitting as bearing and pausing. Like unobtrusive companions, they seem to hint at the possible presence of a body—a body that lingers, observes, and in doing so carries both physical and inner burdens.

Thus, the exhibition unfolds beyond the individual works. Sitting itself becomes part of the experience—a physical gesture that takes up the exhibition’s central question: how we carry within us what we experience.
